The Ivanhoe, a three-story office building built in 1984 and located in the heart of the village of La Jolla, could be classified as recognizable thanks to its unique architectural design, but forgettable due to years of minimal investment. Capstone Advisors engaged McCulley Design Lab to implement a renovation that coalesced improvements with the existing architecture, adapting the building to contemporary office demand while maintaining its character. The renovation included enhancements to the public space; a new public entry; a renovated parking garage, elevators, interior circulation space, restrooms; and new drought-tolerant landscaping.
The design sought to complement the local neighborhood by adapting the building to its surroundings. A mosaic art wall and landscaping helped reduce the presence of the residential-facing side of the building, while the new entry helps create a proper street presence along the business-facing side of the building, providing visitors with a properly designated entry point. The renovation worked to create a seamless extension of the quality and vibrancy indicative of La Jolla while providing a contemporary space where businesses grow and prosper.
Scope of work included commercial interior design, exterior design and architecture, furniture specification, art procurement, signage design, environmental graphic design, lighting design, and landscape design consultation.
