Exquisite Coastal Modern Renovation

The house- a 1962 post and beam in a quiet neighborhood in San Diego- had somehow gotten off track. “It had gone through various remodels and additions over the decades,” says John McCulley of McCulley Design Lab- which he runs with his partner, Janet McCulley- who were called in by the new owners to return the house to its roots and update it for modern life.

The owners, who asked for the renovation to not be trendy or “cold, white-on-white modern,” wanted a warm and inviting, understated but eclectic family hangout with a subtle blend of materials and a central kitchen, all under the original soaring butterfly roof.
